Pinocchio (2022)- Music and the Fictive Dream

 Pinocchio

Pinocchio is a live action musical fantasy film that is a remake of the 1940's Walt Disney's animated feature film Pinocchio. Which the animated film was based off of an 1883 Italian book The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The movie sets place in a small Italian village in 1990. There are 3 main carters in the movie Jiminy Cricket who is appointed to be the conscience (teach Pinocchio right from wrong) for Pinocchio by the Blue fairy that made him a real boy, then there's Geppetto who is the wood carver that made Pinocchio based on is deceased son and wished for him to be a real boy, and lastly there's Pinocchio who is the wooden puppet.

    I've Got No Strings

It was hard to pick a song because I wanted to find a song that summarized the point of the movie. This song doesn't exactly give what the whole movie is but If I had to pick a song it would be I've Got No Strings it describes Pinocchio in the way we all see him. The song is 1:39 sang by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth who is the kid that played Pinocchio. The music was written by Leigh Harline and the lyrics were written by Ned Washington.

I've got no strings to hold me down

To make me fret, or make me frown

I had strings, but now I'm free

There are no strings on me

I want to start off with the opening lyrics. When the movie started me was not a real boy, he was just a wood puppet. When Geppetto made a wish when he saw a shooting star, he wished for Pinocchio to become a real boy. When he did become a living puppet, he lost his strings.

I've got no strings so I have fun

I'm not tied up to anyone

They've got strings, but you can see

There are no strings on me

For the 3rd verse he basically stats that he has no strings like the has said before. But this time he says he is tied to no one. He then sings that they have string, but you can see he does not. I have tried to find out what that means but what I can say is my opinion on that is that has free to do what he wants and others have things that tie them down and hold them in place and move them just like strings will do.

This song seems to have more meaning than I thought it did when I first watched the movie in my opinion. The song could just be written to say he has no string literally. The way I have interpreted it was that he took control of his own life has nothing holding him back unlike everyone else. The entire movie is basically like that. I think it's one of those movies that when you grow up and watch like most Disney movies you see the true meaning of it.

  1. Neat blog post, and an interesting movie choice! I love Disney music, not because it's good per se, but because there are ulterior meanings in every song. I especially see this in their older films, when animation was still fairly bumpy and drawn completely by hand. There was no pressure on the soundtrack, but the producers often knew that the music was exactly how they were going to take their film to the next level. My favorite Disney film is The Aristocats for exactly that reason. If you pay attention to detail, the animation is really rough! But as a massive Jazz/Blues enthusiast and a lover of cats, the soundtrack pulled me in and made me an adoring fan. If you've never seen it, watch it. There is simply nothing like it!

  2. I like that you chose to do your blog on a movie. I agree that this song does the best job in encapsulating the movie. The entire movie is about Pinocchio's journey in life as a boy, how to chose right from wrong, and how to behave like a child. I think your comparison of "I have no strings" to mean that he is in control of his own life is very central to the plot. If he had strings his decisions would be made for him, but without them he gets the experience of "a real boy".
